Natural stone as a basis

You can easily glue a wooden floor directly onto an existing natural stone floor with underfloor heating. So you do not have to remove the existing floor, because you can simply place the wooden floor over the existing natural stone floor. There are a number of factors that need to be taken into account, such as the type of natural stone and the condition of the subfloor

Type of natural stone

Not all natural stone floors are suitable for installing a wooden floor. Natural stone that is porous, such as slate, is not suitable.

Condition of natural stone floor

Before the wooden floor can be installed, the stone floor must be checked. It is important that the subfloor is flat and in good condition before a wooden floor can be installed. If the subfloor is not flat, the planks can come loose.

If the subfloor is damaged, it must be repaired or replaced. In addition, it must be checked whether the tiles are fixed. Check whether the tiles are secure by tapping on them. If there is a hollow sound, the tile is not properly secured. This needs to be replaced.

If the floor is damaged or unsuitable, it can be removed. After this, the floor must be leveled, making it ready for a new wooden floor.

Floor preparation

  • First degrease the existing 'old' natural stone floor with a cleaner, then mop with water.
  • After this, roughen the existing natural stone floor with grit 24, then vacuum.
  • Prime the roughened floor with a primer, then glue the floor with a coarser comb to properly fill any height differences. You must then stick the wooden floor directly onto this.

What about the heat?

Because multiple layers are placed on top of each other, heat transfer is reduced. This will mainly affect the warm-up time of the system. This is the time needed to reach the set temperature in the room. After this it is advisable to keep the temperature constant, as it is a slower system. In combination with underfloor heating , composite floors are used, which have lower resistance, better heat transmission and are more stable. This is why a wooden floor can be installed on natural stone with underfloor heating .
