PLANK FLOOR
The plank floors is the oldest wooden floor pattern. Where in the past narrow planks, sometimes varying widths, were used, wide planks are now popular. In this apartment a width of 280 mm was chosen.
Wooden floors have been used for underfloor heating for over 20 years. With the transition to a sustainable future, underfloor heating in new construction has become almost indispensable. Although wood has the property of insulating, this wooden floor can be applied to underfloor heating and cooling without any problems.
The wide planks are installed throughout the apartment including the living room, kitchen, hallway and bedrooms. In an old apartment, -10dB noise reduction must be taken into account when using a hard floor covering. By using “floating” screed floors in new-build apartments, the wooden floor can be glued directly to the finishing floor, without a resilient/sound-insulating underlay.
The screed floor is insulated and installed “loosely”, which reduces contact noise. It is not even recommended to apply noise-reducing layers to floating screed floors because they can negatively influence each other.

It is advisable to choose a multi-layer parquet floor or a specifically designed wooden floor that is suitable for underfloor heating . These floors are made to minimize expansion and contraction, making them more resistant to the temperature changes associated with underfloor heating .
Do I have to take the humidity level of the new-build apartment into account?
Yes, humidity is an important factor when installing a wooden floor with underfloor heating . The moisture is usually out of the apartment at the time of key collection.
Should I use a moisture barrier under the wooden floor?
This is only necessary when there is rising damp or a floor cooling system without a dew point protector. The moisture barrier helps to block moisture rising from the subfloor and protect the wooden floor.
What about the installation of the wooden floor?
It is important to leave the installation of the wooden floor to a floor installer with experience in working with underfloor heating systems. They can install the floor correctly, taking into account the expansion options and other specific requirements.
Do I need to adjust the underfloor heating temperature for a wooden floor?
Yes, it is important to adjust the underfloor heating temperature when using a wooden floor. It is generally recommended to limit the underfloor heating water temperature to a safe level suitable for wooden floors as specified by the manufacturer (usually a maximum of 35 degrees). The screed on which the wooden floor is installed may not exceed 27 degrees Celsius.
Can I place rugs or carpets on the wooden floor?
Yes, you can place rugs or carpets on the wooden floor. However, it is important to choose breathable materials and thin underlays, so that the heat from the underfloor heating can still be distributed properly. The floor under the rug will color differently than the surrounding planks, because it is not exposed to (sun)light.
