Classic Or Modern Herringbone Parquet

Herringbone parquet fits both a classic and modern interior. If you have a classic interior, choose a herringbone floor with narrow floorboards in combination with band and/or piping.

Herringbone parquet with wide floorboards is best suited to a modern interior, without band and piping. If you want to go for a minimalist look, you can choose to install the floor flush against the wall, so without skirting boards.

Wood types

Herringbone parquet is available in various wood species , such as oak, merbau or afzelia. French oak is by far the most commonly used wood specie . Oak wood offers several advantages:

  • It has a natural and timeless character
  • Oak floorboards can be finished in many colors
  • Oak parquet flooring has a low RC value, making it very suitable for combination with underfloor heating
  • Oak wood is interesting from a price point of view, especially compared to other wood species
  • Because oak wood is easy to work with, it is suitable for all installation patterns

Due to the many advantages of oak, at Uipkes we mainly use oak wood to install herringbone parquet . On request, the herringbone floor can also be supplied in other wood species .

Herringbone Parquet and Color Finish

Which color is best to choose for your parquet floor depends, among other things, on the atmosphere you want to create. For example, a dark floor gives your interior a luxurious atmosphere and white provides tranquility. Using our example of the parquet floor in Utrecht, you can clearly see that the white oiled floor makes the room brighter and, together with the wide floorboards, creates a calm appearance. The herringbone pattern is present, but does not demand all the attention in the room.

In addition to atmosphere, color can make a room optically wider or narrower. For example, if you install a dark floor in a room with a dark ceiling, this will make the room look wider and lower.

Another example: a light-colored ceiling in combination with a light-colored floor ensures that the space looks narrower, higher and deeper. By playing with the colors of the walls, ceiling and floor you arrive at the combination that best suits your taste.

Good to know: Herringbone oak parquet is available from Uipkes in 90 exclusive colors. Is the color you are looking for not listed? Then we can tailor-make the desired color especially for you.

Herringbone Engineered Wood Floor: Suitable for Underfloor heating

Herringbone engineered wood flooring (also called 'duoplank' or 'multiplank parquet') is a layered floor that can be excellently combined with underfloor heating and underfloor cooling. This is because the underside of the floor parts are made of cross-glued plywood with a top layer of solid wood. Because a herringbone engineered wood floor is not a solid wooden floor, its thermal resistance is limited and heat can penetrate the floor well.

Underfloor heating provides considerably more living comfort. You will never suffer from cold feet when you walk across the floor again. The engineered wood flooring in our example is glued to underfloor heating and because wood is a natural product, the residents experience a natural and warm experience from this combination.

If you buy herringbone parquet from Uipkes, we can also install the floor for you, including underfloor heating . This means you only have one point of contact. This saves you time, money and makes planning all work easier.

Tapis Herringbone

Tapis herringbone is a parquet floor that is installed like a carpet. Tapis is the French word for 'carpet'. To install herringbone tapis, a subfloor is placed on the cement floor onto which the solid wooden floorboards are glued and nailed. You can also combine Tapis parquet with underfloor heating .

Because the parquet floor is glued and nailed, the wood works less and walking noises are reduced. On the other hand, installing tapis parquet is very labor intensive, making the costs per square meter much higher than for herringbone parquet.

Variations on the Herringbone Pattern

The herringbone floor is popular and widely used. Many of our customers love beautiful, original designs and stylish floors and pay a lot of attention to the furnishing of their home. For customers who want something slightly different, we offer variations on the herringbone pattern. Do you want a herringbone floor with a twist? Then choose a variation on the herringbone pattern, such as the double herringbone or triple herringbone. Several planks are placed next to each other, so that the herringbone pattern becomes wider.

Another popular variation on the herringbone floor is the elbow pattern, in which the herringbone is turned a quarter turn. View all herringbone patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between solid wood and engineered wood for a herringbone floor?

Solid wood herringbone floors are made entirely of solid wood. Our composite herringbone floors have a top layer of solid wood with a bottom layer of birch plywood. Our engineered floors are more stable and resistant to shrinkage and expansion due to changes in humidity.

Which wood species are suitable for a herringbone floor?

Popular wood species for herringbone parquet are oak, walnut, maple and mahogany. Oak wood is the most common choice due to its durability, hardness, versatility and application in underfloor heating and cooling.

What about the finish of the floor?

Wooden herringbone floors can have different finishes, such as lacquer, oil or hard wax. Lacquer provides a strong protective layer, while oil accentuates the natural appearance of the wood. Hardwax combines properties of both lacquer and oil, but limits the color choice. At Uipkes the floors are treated with (linseed) oil.

What is the difference between glued and floating installation?

Glued installation means that the floorboards are glued directly to the subfloor, while with a floating installation the floorboards are installed on a subfloor without being glued down. Glued installation is more durable and provides better sound insulation, but floating installation may be easier if you want to move the parquet floor in the future. A herringbone floor must always be glued.

What is the best underlay for a herringbone floor?

For herringbone parquet it is important to have a stable, even and moisture-resistant subfloor. Substrates on which a wooden herringbone floor can be installed are sand/cement, anhydrite, gypsum fiber board, magnesite, wooden subfloor, cast floor, cork subfloor and tile floor.

Is underfloor heating suitable for a herringbone floor?

Yes, herringbone parquet can generally be combined well with underfloor heating . However, it is important to check that the specific wood specie and finish you choose is suitable for underfloor heating .

What is the price range for a herringbone parquet floor?

The price of a herringbone parquet is determined by the grading and size. In general, you can expect herringbone floors to fall in a higher price range compared to traditional plank floors because it is more labor intensive to install the herringbone floors.
