If the engineered wood floor has been finished with oil and you want to keep the floor in the same color, sanding is often not necessary. A treatment with oil is sufficient to repair minor scratches and scuffs.

If you want to change the floor color or if there is damage to the floor and re-oiling does not give the desired result, the floor must be sanded.

Unlike parquet that is finished with lacquer, you can also update oiled parquet locally. Ideal if the floor only needs maintenance in high-traffic areas, such as the kitchen.

Sanding and oiling parquet costs approximately €36 per m2. Depending on any additional work you want to have carried out, such as re-milling the bevelled edges, the price per m2 will be higher.

The price for sanding and oiling includes help with moving the furniture to another room on the ground floor or on the same floor where sanding and oiling will take place.

Engineered wood flooring finished with lacquer

With varnished engineered wood flooring, local reparations of the floor is not possible. To repair damage and wear spots, the floor must be completely sanded and varnished. Painting is done in 3 phases. First the floor is primed and then the floor is lacquered twice. Between phases 2 and 3, the floor is lightly sanded again.

How often can engineered wood flooring be sanded?

Engineered wood flooring consists of a bottom layer of cross-glued plywood and a top layer of solid wood. The thickness of the top layer affects the number of times the floor can be sanded. After all, with every sanding, a piece of the top layer disappears.

Because oiled engineered wood flooring can be repaired without sanding, minor damage and wear spots can be removed, meaning the floor will last longer than if the floor is finished with a layer of lacquer.

When is sanding not an option?

Sometimes it is no longer possible to sand a wooden floor. For example, if there is deep damage in the floor or if floorboards are bulging. Sanding engineered wooden floors is also not an option if the top layer of the floor is too thin because the floor has already been sanded several times.
