The type of wooden floor: solid wood or engineered wood

Herringbone floors can be made from solid wood or from engineered floors. Solid herringbone floorboards consist of one piece of wood and can remain beautiful for generations if properly maintained.

The disadvantage of solid wooden floors is that they work relatively hard (expand and contract). As a result, you cannot use the floor with underfloor heating combine. This is possible with engineered floors.

Parquet flooring

An engineered floor is a layered floor. The floor parts are constructed from a bottom layer of cross-glued waterproof birch plywood and a top layer of solid wood. The underlay of engineered wood flooring ensures that the herringbone floor hardly expands or contracts. This means you can even install the floor tightly against the wall without skirting boards.

Because only the top layer of an engineered wood floor consists of solid wood, the costs for the herringbone floor are a lot lower than for a floor made entirely of solid wood.

Our wooden herringbone floorboards are available in different sizes, ranging from 120 by 600 millimeters to 260 by 1300 millimeters. The larger the floorboards, the higher the price per m2. Color finish of the herringbone floor

At Uipkes you can choose from 90 exclusive colors with which you can finish the engineered herringbone wood floor. The color finish you choose does not affect the cost of the herringbone floor. A number of treatments will be carried out for each chosen color to achieve the chosen color.

At Uipkes we offer you the option to have a custom color made if you cannot find the color you want. The costs for a custom color are obviously higher than the costs for our 'fixed' colors.

Wood sorting

The wood sorting says something about the characteristics of the floorboards. For example, consider the number of knots that are visible. Herringbone floorboards with minimal knots cost more than floorboards with slightly larger knots. Knots are formed by branches of a tree, which means that fewer planks without knots can be extracted from a tree than planks with knots, resulting in a higher price.

Band and piping

To give the herringbone floor a classic look and to accentuate the herringbone pattern, you can have a band and piping installed. The strip between the wall and the herringbone pattern is the band. The piping is a narrow frame between the band and the vsigrate floor.

For more contrast in the floor, you can combine a light floor with a dark border or vice versa. To minimize the contrast, you can place the piping and the floor in the same color or leave out the piping. A herringbone floor with a band and piping costs more than a floor without a band and piping.

Frequently Asked Questions

The price differences between suppliers of wooden herringbone floors are sometimes quite large, how is that possible?

This often has to do with the origin and quality of the wood. Unfortunately, wooden herringbone floors are sold that are made with wood of questionable quality. To reduce costs, sapwood is used, for example, to make the floorboards.

Sapwood is less strong and has less beautiful wood grains than heartwood. Heartwood is the inner part of the tree trunk.

In the long term, a cheap wooden herringbone floor is often more expensive, because the floor does not last as long. Moreover, the floor has to come from far away, so transport causes unnecessary environmental pollution.

Uipkes floors are made of European oak that comes from sustainably managed forests. The high quality of our wooden herringbone floors means they can last a lifetime. That is good for the environment and good for your wallet.

Is the price for a double wooden herringbone floor the same as that of a single herringbone floor?

Yes, it doesn't matter whether you want a double or triple herringbone floor, the price is the same.

How much does it cost to maintain a herringbone floor?

The regular maintenance of a herringbone floor is simple and does not cost more than other floor types. Regular mopping and vacuuming is sufficient.

Depending on how intensively the floor is used, the floor must be finished with maintenance oil approximately once every 5 years. You can do this yourself without any problems. The oil only costs a few bucks.

Can a wooden herringbone floor use underfloor heating ?

Yes, a wooden floor in the form of engineered wood flooring can be installed on underfloor heating without any problems. Our parquet fitters have years of experience with this. If there is no underfloor heating yet, we can install underfloor heating .
